Biography
Murilo Bustamante born in Rio de Janeiro, 1966, is one of the most decorated competitors and masters of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Introduced to the jiu-jitsu by his older brothers Marcelo and Mauricio he become a member of the Carlson Gracie Team.
Bustamante won many titles as the World Championships in 1999, and four Brazilian National Championships. Master Murilo Bustamante was one of three BJJ stylists (also Fabio Gurgel and Wallid Ismail) to successfully defend their art in the legendary bare knuckle challenge fight Desafio Jiu-Jitsu vs. Luta Livre (1991). Bustamante fought luta livre champion Marcelo Mendes, winning by technical knock out due to injury at 4:42 of round 1.
Mixing his mastery style of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with solid wrestling and boxing skills, Bustamante had the same impact in the Mixed Martial Arts World as in the Jiu-Jitsu. He is one of the founding members of Brazilian Top Team, became the second middleweight title holder in the history of the Ultimate Fighting Championship when he stopped then-champ Dave Menne with strikes at UFC 35: Throwdown in January 2002.
He successfully defended his title five months later against Matt Lindland before leaving the UFC and signed with PRIDE Fighting Championships.
Today Master Murilo Bustamante divides his time between training, managing and coaching the Brazilian Top Team athletes as Gleristone Santos and Pedo Nobre among others.
